Below are two gift bag patterns. One gives simple instructions without a lining and the other is for a more sturdy bag with lining.

Simple Fabric Gift Bag

This bag is just like making a pillow case, as the shape is rectangular and sewn together on both sides and at one end, leaving one end open.

Once you have decided on the size of the bag, you will need to allow one inch for the seam. Sew the seam on 3 sides, leaving the top side open.

Turn the open top edge in slightly and using your sewing machine stitch it for a clean finish. Take the open end and fold it in about 3 inches for the hem raidersnewswire (the bigger the bag the more inches you will fold it in).

Now create a casing for the ribbon by stitching another row about 1/2 inch above the hem stitch. By pulling a piece of ribbon through the casing you are able to tie the gift bag shut and make an attractive bow.

Lined Fabric Gift Bag

A lined gift bag tends to look better and last longer than one that is not lined, since the lining gives the bag more strength and durability. It also helps with the Christmas peeking factor, dani since it will be more opaque.

To begin, cut out the fabric and lining together into a rectangular shape. You will use 2 pieces of fabric and 2 pieces a lining, so you will have a total of 4 pieces of material.

Place the fabric on top of the lining, fold over the top edges and sew the hem for the opening of the gift bag. Stack fabric and lining with the lining facing to the outside and the decorative fabric facing each other on the inside. Take care that both the hem edges are on top. Now sew the three raw edges 1/2 inch from the edge. Turn the bag inside out and place a long piece of ribbon approximately 2 inches down from the top.
